Hugo Ruyant
Biography
Born in 1992 in Compiègne (France). Lives and works in Paris (France).
Hugo Ruyant occupies a singular space within the medium of painting. His work is a striking blend of bold, vibrant shapes that quietly unfold with an underlying dramatic tension. Driven by a practice that is both conceptual and poetic, he often develops his paintings as constellations of key images that function as evolving narratives.
Characters, objects, and animals appear in close-up, as if caught mid-action, staging condensed moments that echo the absurdity of the human condition. Hugo Ruyant's paintings portray excess, fantasy, and social dynamics that guide our lives through a pictorial language marked by near-erotic linework and a deeply affective approach to color.
Since 2024, we have been representing Hugo Ruyant at Galerie Michel Rein. He has presented three solo exhibitions with the gallery: The Handshake in Paris in 2024, Air Conditioner Fantasies in Brussels in 2025, and Pastoral Melody in Paris in September 2026.
In June 2026, he opened Leave a Mess Age, a major solo exhibition at König Galerie in Berlin. His work has also been presented in South Korea, in Seoul in an exhibition curated by Julia Gai and Minjin Park, and subsequently in Gapyeong as part of the Maqom Residency. Other presentations include exhibitions at Espace Citroën in Paris, Hôtel des Arts in Toulon, and the Institut Français in Madrid as part of the Révélations Emerige programme, curated by Gaël Charbau in 2023.
