Jimmie Durham (1940-2021).
Born in USA, Jimmie Durham has worked as a visual artist, performer, essayist, and poet for more than forty-five years. Predominantly a sculptor, Durham often combines found objects and natural materials and incorporates text to expose Western-centric views and prejudices hidden in language, objects, and institutions. Calling himself an «interventionist» Durham is oftentimes critical in his analysis of society but with a distinctive wit that is simultaneously generous and humorous.
In 2017-2018, Jimmie Durham has benefited from an itinerant retrospective at Remai Modern (Saskatoon), Hammer Museum (Los Angeles), Whitney Museum of American Art and The Walker Art Center (Minneapolis).
Jimmie Durham has participated to major international events including Documenta : 1992, 2012, 2022 and the Venice Biennal : 1999, 2001, 2003, 2013, 2019 during which he received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement.
