Maria Thereza Alves at the Thailand Biennale - The Open World

Chiang Rai, Thailand

Dec. 09, 2023 - Apr. 03, 2024

Maria Thereza Alves is featured in the Thailand Biennale - The Open World, curated by the artistic directors Rirkrit Tiravanija and Gridthiya Gaweewong, together with the curators Angkrit Ajchariyasophon and Manuporn Luengaram.

The artist presents two works: Gathering of Dismembered Knowledges and Curing Dismembered Knowledges.

Maria Thereza Alves investigates the Kok River Forest which was destroyed for the extraction of Teak Trees to supply the International market.
To realise these works the artist consulted photographs, drawings, herbariums and texts by travelers, botanists diplomats, and business people who had been in the area from the 17th to 20th centuries and who recorded the local flora. These testimonies are kept in archives in London and Paris, in particular the Kew Gardens archives, British Lorary, Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Bibliotheque de Botanique, as well as in online sources by researchers Sophie Moiroux and Giuliana Ravviso.
