Maria Thereza Alves is a Brazilian artist and activist living in Europe. Through her artistic works, investing a wide range of medium (drawing, sculpture, installation, photography, video or sound), she delivers a poetic and scientific perspective on the devastating effects of colonialism, slavery or the global commerce of goods. She draws a personal and conscious attention to the being and becoming of displaced individuals and uprooted people.

In 2017, she has been awarded by the Vera List Prize, for her investigation of the botany of European port cities, where the exotism of seeds, plants ands weeds, can still act as a trace of the movement of land and indigenous people.

Maria Thereza has recently exhibited in the Paris Triennial, Guangzhou Triennial, (d)OCUMENTA 13 in Kassel, the Sao Paulo Biennial, the Taipei Biennial, Manifesta in Trento, the Prague Biennal, the Athens Biennal and the Lyon Biennal where she received the Prix de la Francophonie. In 2015 she partipated to Art Dubaï and set up a major solo exhibition in the Centre Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo (CAAC), Seville, Spain. In 2017 she has been awarded by the Vera List Prize.
